You just need to apply online, get the completed form printed, and send it along with all real documents self-attested to the concerned address to complete the application. Once applied, the hassle-free process is quick too. To apply for a PAN card for foreign citizens or NRIs, you have to submit some extra documents. The whole process is described here.
The form needed for NRI PAN Application
For applying as an NRI you will have to fill the form 49A. But if you are a foreign national, and are not an Indian citizen, then you will have to fill the 49AA form. There are two official websites. One is UTIITSL, and another is NSDL. You may use any one of them to access a form, fill it online, and apply. Once you submit the form online, you would get an acknowledgment and a unique 15 digit number. You need to take a print of this acknowledgment copy, and then send it along with all your self-attested copies of documents to the address mentioned. Next, you need to wait while you pay the fees.
Fees for PAN card for NRI application
There are two fee structures for the PAN card for NRI application process. The address you mention for receiving the PAN card by post may be an Indian address or a foreign address. If the address is Indian, you will have to Rs.107 for card processing. Else for a foreign address, you will have to pay Rs.989. When you are applying online you can pay these fees online only. You may use internet banking, or credit or debit card for the payment. However, you may also pay the same using a demand draft. If you make a demand draft, you will have to make it in favor of UTIITSL/NSDL, and then send it with your form and documents.
The documents needed
Applying for the PAN card as a foreigner or NRI, you will need documents and passport-sized photographs. You will have to paste two passport-sized photos of yours on the acknowledgment form. As the NRI or foreign national, you will have to submit a copy of your passport in documents. You will also have to submit a copy of the bank account statement for an account in that country where you stay. You must also submit a bank statement copy, whereas NRI, a minimum of two of your transactions in the past 6 months are reflected.
The processing
After your acknowledgment form with required documents is received by the authorities, the PAN card is made. They would send the PAN card on receipt of application fees. In case you pay online things to get processed once they receive your documents. In case of draft payment, they would wait to get the payments cleared after which they would dispatch the card to your address.
What if you don’t have an Indian address to receive the card?
If you don’t have an Indian address to receive the card then you may specify a foreign address as your residential or official address. The card would be sent to that address then. However, there are some countries that are omitted from the list of countries where PAN cards are being sent. You must check with the list to be sure before you apply.
The process is basically hassled free if you look into it in general. However there are some documents to be submitted, and the list is long, you have to check with the NSDL website totally and attach each one of the required documents. Naturally, as the NRI or foreign citizen, the required documents would be more than that of an Indian national. In such cases assistance of a PAN, an expert can be taken to complete the documentation process without making any mistake.
Concluding it
The PAN card is an important document that needs to be made for transactions and filing ITR in India. The sooner you get it and settle with one, the easier it would be for you.
